The day Mandela came to tea.

In 2011 as part of an Oblong Leeds project with the council I helped local schools put together a video about the Anti-Appartheid movement in Leeds

Frances Bernstein was part of a campaigning family. Her father, Lionel ‘Rusty’ Bernstein, was on trial with Nelson Mandela, and he was imprisoned along with her mother for much of Frances’s childhood. Frances later moved to the UK and joined the anti-apartheid movement in Leeds.

In this video Frances tells the extraordinary story of the surprise visit Nelson Mandela made to their home shortly after her father died.
